1.Evaluation of MBR Performance Using Particle Size AnalysisCompletedThe Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility (AWWU) owns and operates the Girdwood Wastewater Treatment Facility (GWWTF) which serves the resident and transient population of the Girdwood Valley. GWWTF discharges to a tertiary stream and requires advanced wastewater treatment to satisfy the US Environmental Protection Agency wastewater treatment regulations. The wastewater treatment plant has a design capacity of 0.68 million gallons per day (MGD). AWWU is evaluating Membrane Bio-Reactor technology as a possible replacement for the conventional treatment technology currently in use. During storm events and breakup, the wastewater flow to the treatment plan can exceed 1 MGD due to infiltration into the wastewater collection system. The infiltration of glacial silt laden ground and surface water into the system through manholes, sewer services, and sewer mains cause the wastewater to be high in suspended particles of glacial silts. Over time, there is potential for the silts to abrade the membrane surface causing the nominal pore size to increase. The size range and particle distribution in permeate from the MBR system was measured using a Hach 2200 PCX particle counter and related computer software. The particle size and distribution was evaluated at various MBR settings and during varying weather conditions in order to correlate MBR performance with wastewater quality.
